Steam turbines: The Backbone of Global Electricity Generation

A year ago, I had the unique opportunity to work with a steam turbine generator at a CHP plant. It was here that I discovered my genuine interest in thermal power generation. This experience not only deepened my technical knowledge but also opened my eyes to the critical role these devices play in powering our world.
A year later, I’m continuing to learn more about the captivating details of this incredible machine.

Here are some details about the unit I worked with:

  • Type: Bleed Extraction Condensing Turbine
  • Output: 14 MW
  • Driven Equipment: Alternator

Key Components:

  • Governing System
  • Emergency Trip Gear
  • Oil System
  • Shaft Sealing System
  • Rotor (Shaft + Moving Blades)

Steam turbines truly are engineering masterpieces!

Do you know what instrument is used to measure the mass flow rate of steam?

(Hint: Flowmeters!)
